Chats with Brian Wehlburg: Holistic Management Educator and Director of Inside Outside Management

Soils for Life Podcast
Regenerative grazing and the key insights of Holistic Management, with Brian Wehlburg.

Brian Wehlburg and Eli Court from Soils for Life get into the thinking behind regenerative grazing and why it works the way it does.

Brian also shares his insights into Holistic Management, a whole-of-system approach to managing land, animals and people together.

What was covered.

  • Why overgrazing comes down to timing, not animal numbers
  • The two ways we actually overgraze plants, and how to avoid both
  • Why recovery time is the one lever a grazier really controls
  • Why resting brittle country can degrade it rather than heal it
  • The old beliefs that keep good graziers stuck
  • How bunched, moving animals heal a paddock on any scale
  • Practical first steps to get started, and what changes when it works

The Shed Organics Show #75
Holistic Management for Better Farmers / Brian Wehlburg

Jordan from The Shed Organics and Brian chatted about many things including holism and how important it is to manage the whole.

'How do you manage that one part once it is part of a bigger whole? I always use the example of water - water is hydrogen and oxygen. if you studied hydrogen and then you studied oxygen until you know everything that was to know about those two elements... they're gases, they're colourless, they’re odourless, they’re part of combustion and explosives, they’re all of those things. And then you tried to manage water.. the first thing you’d say is … don’t put them on fire because you’d kill us! Once you put them together it's a completely different kettle of fish. For management purposes if we don't look at the big picture the parts literally tell us nothing about how to manage.'

Prof Maria Ehrnström-Fuentes, Assistant Professor at Hanken School of Economics talks to Brian on the Worlds in Transition Blog

“It doesn’t matter where in the world you are, you can help the earth regenerate itself by improving the water cycle, the mineral cycle, and capturing as much sunlight as possible in the plants and on the land. This is what Holistic Management is all about and by improving these things life can get better for not just yourself, but for everybody.”
